Abstract: I will present preliminary results from a variability survey of the Groth Survey Strip, a 30 by 3 arcminute region of sky imaged with HST in 1994 and again in 2000. The high resolution obtained with HST allows us to isolate and measure variable galactic nuclei too faint to be detected from the ground. Small aperture photometry allows us to detect nuclei as faint as MB = -16 in galaxies out to z~1. In addition, several hundred Keck spectra have been obtained for galaxies in this region. Results of our spectroscopic survey for AGN in the Groth strip will also be discussed and compared with the variability detection technique.
