| Abstract: |
The Java Platform offers an efficient environment for development of administrational tasks with its very comprehensive libraries, good support for graphical user interfaces, and concept for distributed processing. With large amounts of FITS data being produced by facilities like the VLT, it is therefore natural to consider the Java Platform for development of tasks for management of FITS files including administration related to pipeline processing. In the context of a feasibility study for using Java for such applications, a small basic Java class library for accessing FITS files was developed. The paper describe the main requirements and general design of the library. Furthermore, benchmarks are presented to illustrate performance and limitations. |
