Abstract: We assembled a library of over 200 H- and K-band stellar spectra spanning a range of Teff, log g, and [Fe/H], and used them to model the total spectra of starburst galaxies. We demonstrate that the Mg i absorption feature at 1.50 microns is a good indicator of metallicity of the stellar population, allowing an empirical calibration. This calibration was applied to a set of local starburst galaxies to measure directly, for the first time, the chemical abundances of highly obscured stellar populations.
