Abstract: During the last decade, much effort has been concentrated on the search for supermassive black holes in nearby galaxies. Here, we present a summary and follow-up work on some quite exceptional X-ray observations: the ROSAT discovery of giant-amplitude X-ray flares from several optically inactive galaxies. These observations are interpreted in terms of tidal disruption of a star by a supermassive black hole at the center of each flaring galaxy.
