Abstract: The Hubble Deep Field (HDF) observations in 1995 and 1998 represent a watershed, not only in the depth and quality of information on distant galaxies, but also in the manner in which astronomical facilities are brought to bear on important questions in astrophysics. This review presents some of the scientific highlights of the HDF observations and discusses some of the technical and sociological aspects of the campaigns.
