Abstract: Observations of atomic hydrogen towards several collisional ring galaxies have revealed extended gaseous plumes, in addition to the characteristic ring pattern. In order to determine the origin of those features, we have performed numerical simulations using two different codes: an N-body code with colliding gas clouds in which the companion galaxy is modelled as a rigid body, and a tree-code that models the stars and gas of both galaxies as live systems. We show that a plunging encounter can extrude material from the companion as it recedes and as radial waves propagate through the target.
