Abstract: We review observations of the dynamics and energetics of the solar chromosphere. The observations are interpreted with the help of detailed radiation hydrodynamic modelling. It is concluded that acoustic waves play an important role for the dynamics and energetics of the chromosphere but additional heating is necessary, even for the internetwork regions. This additional heating is strongly correlated with the observed magnetic field strength.
