Abstract: Line intensities and radial velocities variations were analyzed to check for the stability of the star and circumstellar matter in eta Carinae. It was found that the secondary star is very stable, at least in the last two cycles; the primary star hasn't changed secularly along the last 50 years; and the circumstellar matter in the system has been dissipating at fast rate along the last 15 years. The secular brightening may be due, in part, to such an effect in addition to dust destruction.
