Abstract: Galaxy formation and evolution are investigated using a hierarchical clustering model. The model is based upon the Press-Schechter formalism and describes the distribution of dark halos and halo mergers. Simple assumptions are made to relate dark halos and luminous galaxies in order to model B- and K-band source counts, the B-band redshift distribution and the global star-formation history. The effect of including a star-formation efficiency, which fits far-infrared and submillimetre-wave data, is shown to give encouraging results.
