Abstract: Because of stratification effects, atmospheric motions in pulsating stars should depend on the considered ion used to measure them. Although the pulsation wave could be stationnary, physical conditions usually imply a progressive wave. Consequently, a phase lag may exist between the variations associated to lines formed in different parts of the atmosphere. This running wave effect has already been detected in some beta Cephei, RR Lyrae, Cepheid and Mira stars. One delta Scuti star also points toward this phenomenon. When this effect is present, its detection is easier when the pulsation motion is radial, and if the atmosphere has a strong enough extent. This kind of study is fundamental to build a moving atmosphere model.
