Abstract: An ISOCAM survey has been carried out in order to map and study the structure of starless dense cores in absorption against the diffuse mid-infrared background arising from cloud envelopes. Out of the five ISOCAM images received so far, four show deep, compact absorption features. The absorption profiles derived from cuts through these dark features are fitted using simple models for the core column density structure. In particular, model fits for NH_2 ~r^{-1} and NH_2 ~r^{-2} are compared. The results of this modelling help us constrain the central column densities N0 in the cores, which are typically found to be between 4 times 1022 H_2/cm^2 and 5 times 1023 H_2/cm^2.
