Abstract: I review the varieties of surveys which are presently being used to greatly enlarge the numbers of field horizontal branch stars discovered in the halo and thick disk of the Galaxy, and consider the techniques developed for establishing secure identifications of these stars as members of the horizontal-branch population. I then discuss recent results on the spatial and kinematical properties of the horizontal-branch stars, and indicate directions which suggest themselves for future investigations.
